South Dakota Homeschooling Laws

Reporting: Parents must submit the state Department of Education notice of intent form to the local superintendent. It must be notarized and if it is the first-time filing, must be accompanied by the child’s birth certificate or a sworn statement of identification. A copy of the child’s birth certificate must be kept at home.

Compulsory Attendance: Age 7 to 16. Nine-month school year.

Required Subjects: Math and language arts (typically, reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension)

Testing: Standardized tests must be administered in Gr 2, 4, 8 and 11 and the results must show satisfactory progress.
