West Virginia Homeschooling Laws

Parents must possess a high school diploma to homeschool.

Reporting: Parents must file a Notice of Intent two weeks before beginning to teach.

Compulsory Attendance: From age 6 (birthday before Sept 1) until 16; none specified.

Required Subjects: None specified, but the child must be assessed in the subjects of
math, reading, language, social studies and science.

Testing: Parents must either administer a standardized test; have their child’s portfolio evaluated by a certified teacher; participate in the state testing program or have their child’s progress evaluated by some other means approved by the local school superintendent.
